I like the look of a rough edge sometimes on my pages.  It adds texture and interest to a page or photograph.  I bought  this handy little tool a while back for this very purpose.  It's called the Edge Distresser by Heidi Swapp.  It is simple but handy and quick.  All you do is run the hand tool along the edge of paper or a photo it quickly roughs up the edges a bit - not drastically - just a bit.  Easy and fun!

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be available any more, but Tim Holtz has one out that does the same thing and more. The Tim Holtz Paper Distresser by Tonic Solutions creates altered/aged paper edges, has seven sharp recessed edges and a Kushgrip center for handling comfort. It is even great for easy thread cutting.

As for Heidi Swapp stuff, I know that there is a huge sale right now on some of her great products. Be sure to check it out.
